Tom, the dowel used to connect the elevator halves together is 5/16" thick. One common mistake made in this kit is when the builder mistakenly uses the thinner wing pin dowel (supplied in the kit)...

Leroy, the back of the tank is far enough in front of the wing bolts for me to get my hand in there to install them. I was careful in the planning stage to leave just enough room.
