i just re-engined my Reaction 54 with a new JetCat 100RX and took it out to fly for the first time in a few years .. the little 100 fits perfectly, and provides very nice power for the plane. The...

JohnVH,

On my R54, I added smoke by mounting one of Dan Gill's wet centerline tanks under the wing. I think it was the one for the F-16. I put the smoke pump in the ECU bay, works really well. Not...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Not sure if it helps but I have a Wren 100 (about 22#) on mine .. I replaced a Wren SuperSport (18#) and the difference was quite noticeable .. flew fine with the SS, but LOTS more fun with the 100...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Yep, DCRC .. had the reaction out for the first flights of the season just this past weekend. we usually have a pretty good turnout of jets on a nice weekend, and I do expect to be out there Sat or...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Agree with all of that advice. you can also crow the ailerons up 1/2" or so, that helps too. I do that if there is no wind to land into.

Congrats!

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Bob, I have not flown with the pitot airspeed sensor but we have confirmed with radar gun and GPS in a steady pass my R54 does about 155 mph in level flight after a few laps at full throttle and...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

FYI, I have the RCATS telemetry system in my R54, and "normal" smooth flying, with some sorta tight turnarounds, and standard aerobatics, gets to 6-7 Gs according to the RCATS system. If we ever get...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Bruce,

Just think .. if you redid the wing, perhaps a little thinner airfoil, a little sweep, and an option for winglets or wing tanks (fiberglass parts .. interchangable .. attached with CF...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Thanks the info, Eddie ... I love A-4s and have ofter thought about getting one of Tam's A4s. Nice to know the SS or 100 would be a good motor. I am also working on a turbine conversion of Mark...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Hi Eddie,

I still have the SS ... sitting on the bench at the moment. The R54 with the W100 is like another airplane .. speed difference is greater than I expected and vertical is comparable to...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

I've got to agree with that regarding "getting bitten by the jet bug".

I flew "heavy metal" warbirds for years and always said "no, I am not a jet guy!" .. till one of my buds let me fly his...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Guys,

According to some measurements done at Ron Ballard's open house, the Wren 100 burns 12 oz/min at 22 lb thrust. The generic spec for the SuperSport is 18 lb at 10 oz/min. Yes, more thrust...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Holy cow! The Wren 100 is awesome on the R54 :-)

Sorry no videos (long story) .. but it does go noticeably faster, has much better vertical and it sounds really really cool.

The airframe...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Good point. The older FADEC ECUs have a safety feature that sometimes causes the idle to come up to 60K-ish RPM at low throttle, and on a few occasions when I have landed with extra idle thrust it...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Ha! Well I'll see if I can post some video, but honestly, I doubt you'd be able to judge much from the video .. a few mph in top speed or a better vertical is kind of hard to notice in a video. I...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

We shall know on Saturday! I picked up a Wren 100 at the Wren open house, it arrived by UPS today, and will be flying in my R54 this weekend. Swapping it in place of the Supersport should be pretty...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Is there any R54 thread wisdom out there on what used R54 airframes are bringing in the marketplace?

I have one done up in a Navy trainer/Panther-like scheme, I posted here on the thread...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

I've flown both. Maybe he hasn't. No comparison for me.

Both are good trainers, but the Reaction excels as a sport jet too, most of the Boomerang owners I know are selling/trading and moving on...

Thanks, Eddie, that looks great!

R54 gang,

I just had a nice conversation with Bruce to get one of the new kits.

Curious if one of the folks here who has done the "add intakes (and maybe cockpit on top of hatch)" mod would...

That is, without a doubt, the nicest looking R-54 yet!

John,

I used the small trailing link strut from Dreamworks and a BVM 2.25" wheel as a replacement for the stock nose strut. You just cut the original wire right above the coil and the trailing...

RE: Reaction 54 Jet Kit

Check on earlier posts on this thread, this has been discussed. Bruce reports no problems with his done that way, several builders have installed it "conventionally" as you suggest. Many (including...
