Going though the process of getting the paint on. Got a reasonable paint match for the vinyl I am using. Having the vinyl cutter is great as I can cut masks for paint or vinyl to stick on.

I got a 3M masking tool. If you've ever done much masking you will love this tool. This pretty much completes the paint although I might put on a black anti glare panel. I will put on clear.

Ive been using Fusion 360 as my 3D modeling tool after having used Solidworks for a number of years. Fusion is also free for hobbyists and startups. Started playing around with the sculpting tool and love it. Working on this spat for Amadeus.

That's looking great Rod. I'm with Barrie in that I would consider going back to IC in pattern if I could run a petrol and still come in under weight.

Maybe take a DA or DLE 35 to a someone who can work some magic on it without making it blow up, a carbon tuned exhaust and see what happens!

Interesting. The DLE 35 RA fits quite well into the electric version. The weight is 1.26kg and the YS 200 is 1.065KG. I would expect the YS to be a bit more powerful as it will be on 30% nitro. I can design and build pipes, and the DLE on a pipe might respond to a higher exhaust timing as the stock timing is probably fairly low. I wonder how a bit of nitro in the petrol would go?

I am also interested in the gasoline option. I'm sure you've read MTK's thread here about his efforts primarily with the OS 33GT. He seemed to really like the engine until they started having mechanical failures. The DLE 35 RA being rear exhaust will make the exhaust system easier, eliminating the need for the wrap around header. I did see that one (a DLE 35 RA) was run at the World Championships this year. Back in the early days of the TOC, competitors were using gas engines converted to methanol use which produced more power. Is this still a feasible alternative? Spending $100 or $150 to modify a $350 DLE 35 RA is still much less expensive than a YS 200 and straight methanol/oil fuel is also pretty reasonable from a cost perspective, though for me, cost is not really the motivating factor. I just want a simple, powerful 2-stroke engine. Lastly, what about the OS gas glow plug. I know they use it in their smaller gasoline engines, but I haven't heard of any 'research' into using it in larger engines (saves the weight of the ignition module and battery).
Thoughts?

The Amadeus is looking great, by the way, and sorry to 'steal' the thread.

Hi Flywilly. Interesting about the glow plug, I had forgotten about that. Seems to be very little about the DLE35RA on a pipe when it seems such an obvious thing to do. I managed to deduce the exhaust timing from the available info, stroke 30mm and rear view drawing. As i expected it was a conservative 148 degree duration, about right for a muffler. For a pipe 164 degrees would be better. This means grinding 2mm off the top of the exhaust port. For tuned pipe design Jennings two stroke tuners manual is the holy grail.

I design pipes for broad range though so the front cone is set for a lower rpm than the rear one. I make my pipes from .6mm ali sheet brazed together with a propane torch. However commercial ones will work fine. Header size looks like it should be 7/8".

There was talk about using the OS gas glow plug somewhere, but haven't seen if anyone actually tried it.

CDI would be more efficient and give more mid range torque which is better for todays style.

HI Rod, Hope I'm not butting in on your thread, though guess it's all related. Mike S tried an OS #5 glow plug in his Webra35 petrol 2-stroke. Ran very well with the plug powered up, but dropped revs significantly when we took the power off and then had a slow throttle response. It was a little better on higher octane and maybe Av-gas might improve, but the electronic ignition still seems best.
The good news is we finished and ran up the DLE 35RA in the new Matrix conversion at the "Shed" today. Weight ready to fly with a 2100 LIfe battery was a stunning 4.560 grams. I think it's the first plane ever that I've helped build that's come out a pound under the target weight !! It was one of Ewan's latest molded fuselages with kevlar in the laminate. I doubt that we will need a pipe, though some experimenting with larger lower pitch props might be on the menu.
I think your colour scheme looks great, trust we'll see it at Galloway Farm or the Nats. Regards, Barrie.

Hi Barrie thanks for the info. Looking great. I'm thinking of kevlar too.

Those drawings are interesting Rod and an encouraging result from Barrie too. I guess the only other thing to keep in mind 2 stoke pipes are heavy and the YS exhaust is small and very light.

It was back to work this week. For me that means getting back into the workshop Covering on and surfaces hinged. Graphics are done on the vinyl cutter. More Logos to come. Underside is simplified upper scheme.

Worked on the graphics again today, pictures will be tomorrow. More work on drawing for 3d printed spats. Hollowed out and leg recesses on this version. Fusion is pretty new to me but I am really liking it.

3D printed spat didn't work out as the support material wouldn't come out. Dusted off the Miro spat mold and made one with 50gm glass and 80 gm carbon.

Made some custom 3mm titanium turnbuckles. I needed left hand and right hand taps and dies for this. I had been planning to do this for quite a while so it was good to get a result. The ailerons will be treated the same way. I need to get some aluminium servo horns.

Made the ESC mount. will cut cooling holes directly in front of it. Looks like I could do with a little more bracing on those rear motor supports.

Put it together and had a weigh up. With batteries and pretty much everything else except spats rx and battery tray 4650gm. I'm thinking 4800gm AUW. I don't feel like I did a great job on the wings and could lose some there. I would like to add some to the fuselage though.

Cut ESC cooling holes. Glued a pattern on with glue stick then cut and filed. The heat sink is directly behind the holes. Talking about cooling I still need to make an air exit system somewhere around the middle of the model. I have a hole at the back but feel I need more.

Got the second spat done. Would still like to make a more compact version. Will probably glue them on with silicone. Got the aileron servos in.

Made a battery tray from carbon/foam composite. I make this myself and when I do make a big piece so there is some stock left over. Its long enough so I can get the CG to 25%.

Made aluminium wheel collars and got some undercoat on the spats. Also got the ESC connected and ran the motor for the first time.

Printing pockets for the servo lead sockets. These glue into the side of the fuselage for the wing and stab servos to plug into.
